3 Decisions Before an Acne-Scar Consultation
SkinArticleSet the goal, timing and care commitment before choosing a procedure.

In this article
If you keep makeup on until your partner falls asleep because you feel uncomfortable showing your skin, you can mention that at a consultation. You can also explain the change you want without committing to treatment that day.
Three decisions to discuss
- Which change would matter to you? Name the texture or particular scars you want assessed. Different scar types require different approaches, and treatment can make scars less noticeable. Ask what improvement is reasonable for your skin and what may remain.1
- Is this the right time for scar treatment? Active acne is usually treated first to reduce inflammation and prevent further scars. Tell the dermatologist about acne treatments used now or within the past two years, because some combinations or timings can cause unwanted effects.1
- Can the proposed care fit your schedule and budget? Ask about appointments, downtime, home care and the full cost of the plan. These commitments can influence which treatment is suitable. Request the information before booking a procedure.1
Write the goal in your own words
You might want to understand one scar, discuss a procedure or stop comparing every option online. Put that aim at the top of your questions. Ask the dermatologist to explain the proposed treatment’s risks as well as the expected improvement.
If a plan feels larger than you expected, take it home to review. Ask which parts are essential, what would be optional and when to revisit the decision. You can decide how much time, money and attention you want to give it.
Skin, Head to Toe includes a SkinSort worksheet and a 12-week SkinLog. Use them to organize your skin concerns and the routine you want reviewed. See the book.
