Acute Hair Matting: Get the Scalp Assessed Before Choosing a Removal Plan

  2. Ask for an assessed care plan

If your hair has suddenly become densely entangled and you are unsure how to deal with it, contact a clinician for an assessment. Explain what changed and ask for advice about care while waiting.

Include the scalp in the conversation

A clinician assesses the appearance. Trichoscopy can help identify small knots, twisting and possible lice infestation. Other scalp conditions, including fungal infection, seborrhoeic dermatitis, psoriasis and pityriasis amiantacea, belong in the differential diagnosis.1

When arranging care, describe any discomfort or changes you have noticed in the scalp as well as the entanglement. Note when it began and bring the names of products you have already used. Let the service tell you whether it needs photographs before the appointment.

Ask for an assessed care plan

DermNet1 describes treatment as difficult and lists approaches that can include separating or removing affected hair and treating associated conditions. The examination should guide that discussion rather than an online removal recipe.1

Ask what applies to your finding, who should carry out any proposed removal and how the scalp will be cared for. Explain concerns about changing your hair’s appearance. Get the instructions in writing, including which changes should prompt earlier contact.

Hair, Everywhere includes a monthly Hair Log and a red-flag list and visit script. Use them to keep observations and appointment questions together alongside professional care. Explore the hair playbook.
