A Biliary Function Scan After Gallbladder Removal: Why Might It Be Offered?
Bloating & DigestionArticleAsk which question the proposed scan is intended to answer in your case.

Seek urgent medical advice for abdominal pain lasting over 30 minutes. Sudden severe pain, pain spreading to the back with vomiting, a very high temperature or shivering, or yellow skin or eyes needs emergency assessment. Do not wait for a scan. These symptoms do not establish gallstones.1
Myth: no gallbladder means no purpose for the scan
CUH explains that a hepatobiliary function test assesses the biliary system, including the liver, bile duct and gallbladder. It can be performed in people without a gallbladder. The referral’s purpose needs your clinician’s explanation.2
Keep the letter beside your notes during the conversation. Ask for the exact test name to be written out if different documents use different wording. Record the explanation in ordinary language so you can return to it afterward.
Ask about your own referral
Ask: “Which question do you want this test to answer, given that my gallbladder has been removed?”2
Put any unanswered question beneath the answer. If you have earlier reports or operation information, ask the team which documents it wants to review. You do not have to remember every detail of an old appointment to request a clear explanation now.
Contact the unit before attending
CUH asks people with possible pregnancy or breastfeeding to contact nuclear medicine beforehand. It also asks for advance notice of mobility difficulties so arrangements can be considered. Request instructions for your own appointment.2
Save the booking contact with the letter. If an instruction is unclear, ask the unit to explain it before arranging your day. Write the response beside the question that prompted it.
Keep the result discussion separate
CUH makes results available through the referring clinician, team or GP. Confirm who will explain your report and how to contact them if the expected message does not arrive.2
Bloated by Dinner includes a Test It list and visit script. Use them to organize your questions and record the explanation alongside your appointment papers. Explore the digestion playbook.
