A prescription discussion should name what you want to change: inflamed bumps, clogged pores, or both. Bring your current products and the dates you started them so the next choice reflects what your skin has already tolerated.

Check the formulation

Two trials compared once-daily dapsone 7.5% gel with vehicle for moderate facial acne. The pooled analysis included 4,340 people aged 12 or older; mean age was about 20.1

That is not a trial specifically in postmenopausal women or a comparison with 5% gel. Confirm the strength on the prescription. Our adult acne guide covers the assessment before choosing treatment.

Check the size of improvement

At week 12, 29.8% versus 21.1% reached the investigator’s none-or-minimal acne rating: an 8.7-percentage-point difference. Adjusted mean inflammatory-lesion reductions were 15.8 versus 13.9.1

A success rating and fewer lesions are different outcomes. Ask which matters for your treatment review. Take photographs in comparable lighting rather than judging a new prescription from one unusually good or bad morning.

Check the analysis

One site was excluded for study-conduct problems. The FDA2 review describes multiple imputation for missing outcomes; sensitivity analyses gave similar conclusions.2

The pooled report records 3,977 completions. Allergan sponsored the research; four authors were employees. Twelve weeks does not establish sustained clearance after stopping.1

Put a review date beside the start date. Before that appointment, note how often you used the gel, missed applications, new products and any irritation. These details help the prescriber distinguish an incomplete trial from an unsuitable treatment.

Check the current precautions

The current US Aczone 7.5% label permits use from age nine, once daily, with reassessment if there is no improvement at 12 weeks. Dryness and itching can occur.3

Its blood warnings matter: stop and seek immediate medical attention for gray or blue lips, nail beds or mouth lining, possible methemoglobinemia. Disclose G6PD deficiency; TMP/SMX can increase hemolysis risk in this group.3

The label advises avoiding this gel with oral dapsone or antimalarials, and in congenital or idiopathic methemoglobinemia.3 Stop and contact the prescriber promptly for dark urine, unusual weakness or yellow skin.3

Benzoyl peroxide applied alongside dapsone can temporarily turn skin or facial hair yellow or orange.3 The 2024 acne guideline advises using benzoyl peroxide at a different time of day.4 Ask for written timing instructions for the products you already own.

Skin, Head to Toe includes “Twelve Weeks,” with dated photographs and a Skin Log for tracking products, spots and irritation. Use that record at the treatment review. See the book.
