If worry about dental treatment is making the appointment hard to face, tell the dental team before the treatment day. Ask which options fit the procedure and your health history. If intravenous sedation is proposed, request the preparation and recovery instructions while there is time to arrange help.

Discuss the procedure and your concerns together

Give the team your medical history, medicine list and any previous problems with sedation or general anaesthesia. UCLH’s guidance identifies these as important to the assessment.1

Describe what worries you, whether it is an injection, discomfort, feeling unable to speak or a previous experience. Ask how you will communicate during treatment and what the team will do if you need a pause. Request a discussion of the proposed option’s benefits, risks and alternatives before agreeing.

Confirm what preparation applies at your clinic

Ask for the exact instructions for eating, drinking and medicines. If anything conflicts with another clinician’s directions, ask the teams to resolve it before the appointment.

Tell the clinic if you are ill, pregnancy is possible or you are breastfeeding, and ask whether that changes the plan.1

Sedation can reduce breathing and blood oxygen; breathing is monitored during the procedure. Bruising can occur where the cannula enters the vein.1

Ask how monitoring will be handled and which risks matter for your circumstances. If needles are a concern, say so when preparation is discussed rather than waiting until the cannula is being placed.

Arrange the escort before treatment day

UCLH requires an adult escort who accompanies the patient, waits and takes them home; treatment under sedation will not proceed without one. Its guidance advises travel home by car or taxi and notes that overnight support may be needed.1

Confirm your own clinic’s requirements and share them with the person helping you. Discuss transport, availability and any support needed at home. If arranging an escort is difficult, contact the clinic before the appointment to discuss the options.

Keep recovery instructions beside the appointment details

Sedation can affect coordination and judgment afterward. UCLH’s 24-hour precautions include avoiding driving, cycling, alcohol, responsibility for children and important decisions. Patients are assessed before discharge.1

Ask when work and caring responsibilities can resume, and arrange another adult for tasks the clinic says to avoid. Request written instructions for the dental treatment itself, any medicines and whom to contact if you need advice after leaving. Have your escort read those instructions too.
