Double-Balloon Enteroscopy After Earlier Tests: Confirm the Route and Purpose

If you have already had digestive tests and are now being offered double-balloon enteroscopy, you may wonder how to explain another appointment to work or family. Ask the team what remains to be investigated and which arrangements belong to this procedure.

Check the question behind the referral

Before arranging the day, ask: “Which finding or symptom are we investigating now? What do you need from this examination that the earlier tests did not provide?”

Have the clinician connect the recommendation to your earlier report. Ask whether the unit has the relevant records and whether anything else needs completing before the appointment. Write the purpose beside the procedure name so you can refer to it when you speak to the service again.

Confirm the route in your plan

The trust explains that the endoscope may pass through the mouth, the back passage or sometimes both. Balloons help advance the instrument through the small intestine in short steps.1

Ask which route is planned for you and why. Confirm that the preparation information you have received matches that appointment. If different letters appear to give different directions, contact the unit to resolve them before starting preparation.

Understand what may be done

Biopsies or polyp removal may be performed during enteroscopy. The leaflet identifies risks including perforation and bleeding after polyp removal, and says abnormalities can still be missed.1

Ask what the endoscopist expects to do, what you are being asked to consent to and how the risks apply to you. If a finding differs from what was expected, ask how the team would decide the next step. Request an explanation of the alternatives relevant to your assessment.

Settle the practical instructions

Check the written plan for medicines, food and drink, bowel preparation, sedation, transport and support afterward with your own unit. Ask it to clarify any uncertainty before you change a medicine or preparation schedule.

Tell the team about previous difficulty with a procedure or preparation. If you need communication support, ask how it will be arranged. Confirm how much time to allow for the appointment and recovery before committing to work or caring responsibilities.

Separate the first explanation from laboratory results

UHB says a brief outline of findings can be given before discharge. Laboratory results from a biopsy or removed polyp take longer, and detailed results and any treatment should be discussed with the GP or specialist.1

Ask who will explain each set of findings, when to expect contact and whom to approach if you have not heard. Request a copy of the procedure report and keep it with the earlier investigation information.

Before leaving, get the written aftercare instructions and contact details for problems during recovery. At follow-up, return to the question behind the referral: what has been answered, what remains uncertain and what happens next?
