3 Checks When You Discuss a Fecal Elastase Result
Bloating & DigestionArticleReview the sample, the result range and what the test can establish.

Keep the laboratory report and a note about the sample you submitted for your results appointment.
Three checks for the results conversation
-
Was the sample suitable? The clinical update specifies a semi-solid or solid sample. Tell the clinician if yours was liquid. Ask whether the sample quality changes interpretation or whether another sample is needed.12
-
Which range does the result fall into? The clinical update describes less than 100 micrograms per gram as good evidence of EPI and 100–200 as indeterminate. Ask how your exact value fits the symptoms and medical history being assessed.1
-
What other information are we using? Improvement during a trial of pancreatic enzymes is unreliable for diagnosing EPI. Imaging can help assess pancreatic disease but cannot itself identify EPI. Ask the clinician what the overall findings establish and what remains to be checked.1
If another sample is requested
Follow the collection instructions supplied by the clinic or laboratory. Keep urine, toilet water and toilet paper out of the sample. Ask the team to explain any medicine instructions before you change what you take.2
Write down who will review the next result and when you should expect contact. At the appointment, ask for the interpretation and next-step plan together so you have both on record.
Bloated by Dinner lists a Bristol card, Test-It list and visit script. These can help organize stool observations and questions for a digestive-care appointment. See the book.
