Myth: liquid means tube-ready

NHS Specialist Pharmacy Service1 explains that even liquid medicines can block feeding tubes. Suitability depends on the formulation and the tube, including where it ends. Instructions can differ between brands of the same medicine.1

Get an individual plan

Ask your pharmacist or prescribing team: “Has this exact product been checked for my actual tube? Can you explain and write down my administration and monitoring instructions?” SPS recommends written and verbal instructions, particularly when moving between care settings.1

Keep the explanation with your existing care documents. If someone helps you at home, bring their questions too. Leave space beside each question to record the answer in the professional’s own words.

Do not improvise a substitute

The NHS2 advises against crushing pills, opening capsules or altering medicines without medical advice. Ask your team about any unclear instruction before acting.2
