Femoral Hernia: Why Might Repair Be Recommended Promptly?
Bloating & DigestionArticleAsk your surgeon about the reason for repair and the approach proposed for your confirmed hernia.

In this article
If you have a hernia with pain, bloating, nausea or vomiting, blood or coffee-ground-like vomit, constipation, a high temperature or shivering, or sudden confusion, get urgent help from NHS1 111 in England or your local urgent-care service elsewhere. Do not wait for a routine surgical discussion.2
Why not simply watch it?
For a clinician-confirmed femoral hernia, the NHS1 says treatment is almost always recommended straight away because complications are more likely than with some other hernia types. Bowel can become trapped, causing obstruction or loss of its blood supply. Ask your surgeon how this affects your own plan.1
Which repair is being proposed?
Open and keyhole approaches are possible. The choice depends on suitability and the surgeon’s experience; both have advantages and disadvantages. Ask: “Why do you recommend this approach for me, and what are its risks?”1
What should I clarify before leaving?
Ask the team to explain the next arrangements and whom to contact about new symptoms. Keep that information with your appointment details.12
