Fertility App for Birth Control?Ask About Training First
PeriodsArticleDiscuss the method, expert teaching and your own circumstances before changing contraception.

Before using a fertility app to guide pregnancy prevention, discuss the approach with a trained professional. NHS1 guidance says an expert, such as a fertility awareness practitioner or midwife, should teach natural family planning. An app’s display does not establish your personal protection.1
Questions before changing the plan
- Who can teach me? Ask your GP surgery or sexual health clinic about someone specially trained in fertility awareness.1
- Does the method fit my circumstances? Discuss irregular periods, health conditions and current medicines. The NHS1 says natural family planning is not suitable for everyone.1
- How would I change from my current contraception? Ask your clinician for an individual transition plan. Do not choose your own stopping date from an app.
Clarify what the app is doing
The NHS1 says apps and monitoring devices can help track fertile days, but none are officially recommended by the NHS. This is UK guidance, not an evaluation of a particular app.1
Bring the app’s name. Ask how it relates to the method and what to do with uncertain information.
Keep the instructions. This checklist does not identify fertile days or provide a protocol.
Period, Handled includes a Period Scorecard and a Flag-It list with a visit script. Use the script to organize the contraception questions you want clarified. See the book.
