4 Observations to Share About a Receding Hairline and Thinning Brows
HairArticleWhat to tell a dermatologist when frontal fibrosing alopecia is one possible explanation.

In this article
A changing hairline and sparse eyebrows belong in the same conversation with your dermatologist.
Four observations to write down
-
Where the hairline has moved. FFA often starts as a band of hair loss along the front and sides of the head. Note which areas changed and when you first noticed them. It can develop slowly, but faster loss is possible.1
-
Whether your eyebrows changed. Some people notice eyebrow loss before a receding hairline. Tell the dermatologist about either brow, even if you’ve been covering the change with makeup.1
-
Itch, pain and hair loss elsewhere. The dermatologist may ask about scalp symptoms and loss on other body areas. Keep those details together instead of limiting your notes to the hair you see in your brush.2
-
Your health and treatment history. Bring medication names and mention other diagnosed hair-loss conditions. FFA can occur alongside female-pattern hair loss or traction alopecia, so one explanation may not account for every change.2
What the examination may involve
Expect a close look at your scalp, hairline and eyebrows. A dermatologist may take a small scalp biopsy to identify the type of loss. FFA is often diagnosed after menopause, but it also occurs earlier. Age alone cannot rule it out.12
Once follicles have scarred, they cannot grow hair. Ask whether the treatment goal is preserving remaining hair, easing symptoms or possible regrowth in areas that haven’t scarred. Treatment results vary.12
