3 Treatment Questions After a Gallstone Finding

Ask about symptoms, the stone's location and what the proposed procedure will do.

  2. 2. Where is the stone, and what will the procedure treat?

  4. Do not wait for a routine appointment when symptoms change

If “gallstones” appears on a scan report, ask the clinician to explain the finding before you start arranging time off for an operation. Bring the report and describe the symptoms that led to the scan, including anything that has changed since then.

1. Are these stones thought to explain my symptoms?

Gallstones can block a bile duct and cause pain in the upper abdomen, with nausea or vomiting. Some are found during imaging for another problem and cause no symptoms.1

Describe where the pain was, when it started and how long it lasted. Ask what the clinician thinks the scan explains and whether another symptom needs a separate assessment. Keep your account literal. You do not need to make every digestive complaint fit the report.

2. Where is the stone, and what will the procedure treat?

Gallbladder removal, called cholecystectomy, is the main treatment for gallstones that need treatment. A stone in the common bile duct may require ERCP, an endoscopic procedure to clear that duct. These are different procedures, so ask what is planned for you.1

Request the procedure name in writing and ask whether the plan involves one procedure or more. Confirm who will explain the risks, expected benefits and alternatives. Bring up your medicines and previous operations during that conversation.

The NIDDK describes laparoscopic and open gallbladder removal. Inflammation, infection, scarring or a problem during laparoscopy can affect which operation is needed. Ask the surgeon how your health history changes the plan and the recovery arrangements.2

3. What does the plan require at home?

Laparoscopic surgery may allow a same-day return home; open surgery can involve a longer hospital stay and recovery. Some people develop softer, more frequent stools after removal. Discuss bowel changes with the care team.2

Ask for instructions that fit your work, transport and help at home. And ask whom to call if the recovery does not follow those instructions. Write the contact details beside the appointment date rather than leaving them in a separate message you have to hunt down.

Do not wait for a routine appointment when symptoms change

Seek urgent medical advice for abdominal pain lasting longer than 30 minutes. Sudden severe abdominal pain, pain spreading to the back with vomiting, a very high temperature or shivering, or yellow skin or eyes needs emergency assessment. Call 911 or your local emergency number for an emergency.1
