A kit arriving at home can make a test feel simple, until you open the instructions and realize preparation begins before test morning. Read the whole leaflet before choosing a day, especially if you take regular medicines.
1. Confirm the medication instructions before changing anything
UCLH’s home-test protocol gives different instructions for occasional and daily antibiotics or laxatives. It also addresses probiotics and medicines affecting gut movement.1
Send the testing team your current medication list and ask which instructions apply to you. If an antibiotic is prescribed before the planned test, tell the team so they can advise about timing. Keep the answer with your kit.
2. Arrange the food and fasting plan
The service specifies food restrictions and an overnight fast. It also flags the glucose drink and possible insulin adjustments for people with diabetes.1
Ask for a safe, individualized plan if you have diabetes or another reason fasting may be difficult. Confirm the allowed drinks, preparation start time and what to do if you accidentally eat. Do not guess about changes to diabetes medicine.
3. Set up the sample sequence and return plan
The UCLH instructions describe collecting a fasted sample before the glucose drink, recording times and collecting later samples in a defined order. They also specify how to return the sealed samples and paperwork.1
Before starting, arrange the numbered collection materials, results sheet and timer. Check your own kit’s sampling intervals and return deadline. Ask how to get help if a bag will not seal or a sample is missed.
Ask how the result will be discussed
UCLH sends the report to the referring doctor for discussion of results and any treatment.1
Confirm who will contact you and when to follow up. Bring the full report to that conversation. Our existing article on SIBO breath-test results covers questions about the limitations of interpretation.
