If a pharmacist or doctor has recommended hydrocortisone buccal tablets for your mouth ulcer, check how to use that exact product. The NHS1 says to follow the professional’s instructions or the medicine leaflet.1

Myth: every tablet is swallowed

The NHS1 says this buccal tablet goes against the ulcer and dissolves there. Do not chew or swallow it: doing so means it will not work and may cause side effects.1

If the instructions are unclear, ask your pharmacist to explain them before using the tablet. This article does not choose a medicine or diagnose the sore.

Know when to return

The NHS1 says to see your doctor if the ulcer has not healed after five days of this treatment, or if it heals but comes back. Do not keep extending treatment without professional advice.1
