Vault Smear After Hysterectomy: Confirm Who Arranges It
Intimate HealthArticleIf your gynecology team recommends this follow-up, ask about its booking route.

In this article
If you have been advised to have a vault smear after hysterectomy but no invitation arrives, contact your gynecology team about the plan. Do not assume the absence of a routine screening letter means the recommendation has ended.1
A different sample and booking route
A vaginal vault smear takes a sample from the top of the vagina. Whether you need one after surgery depends on your clinical history and the gynecologist’s advice.1
North Cumbria Integrated Care explains that vault smears are not prompted by the usual cytology recall letter. In that service, the gynecologist arranges them with the colposcopy team. Ask your own service how its arrangements work.1
Make the next step clear
Try: “You recommended a vault smear after my operation. Who arranges it, how will I receive the appointment, and whom should I contact if I have not heard?”1
Keep the team’s answer with your surgery and follow-up information. Have it clarify any conflicting instructions.1
Down There, Decoded includes an appointment script. Use it to keep your questions together. See the book.
