Snap-In Implant Dentures vs. Regular Dentures: What Reviews Show Before You Pay
Breath & MouthArticleImplants that anchor a denture can make it far more stable, and overdentures on implants survive at high rates over five years. Reviews also find that overall quality of life isn't always better than with conventional options, and repairs are common. Here is what to weigh before a costly decision.

In this article
Loose dentures, especially lower ones, are one of the most common complaints after tooth loss. Implant-supported dentures, often called “snap-in” overdentures, use two or more implants with attachments to hold the denture in place. They’re also expensive. Here is what two 2022 reviews found.
What implants do well
Implant support substantially improves denture stability, chewing function and satisfaction compared with conventional dentures.1 Overdentures connected with ball or locator-style attachments were linked to high quality-of-life scores.1
Survival is high: implant-retained overdentures stayed in use 95% to 100% of the time at five years.2
Where expectations matter
- Across studies, implant-supported options didn’t show overall superiority in quality of life over conventional dental work, partly because people’s expectations strongly shape how satisfied they feel.1
- Patients and dentists often judge appearance differently.1
- Implants can be cost-effective for people willing to pay more for a better day-to-day experience.1
Repairs come with the territory
“Survival” means the denture is still in use, not that nothing went wrong.2 Common problems include:2
- the denture cracking or chipping
- attachments wearing out or loosening
- inserts needing replacement
- occasionally an implant fracturing
Ask what maintenance costs to expect, such as periodic insert changes.
Before you decide
A careful plan before surgery, including how the final denture will look and where implants go, is key to long-term success.2
Questions to ask
- How many implants, and what kind of attachment?
- What’s the full cost, including surgery, the denture and routine maintenance?
- How often do inserts need replacing, and what does that cost?
- Would relining or a new conventional denture solve my problem first?
- Does my bone, health or smoking affect my chances?

Try: “My lower denture slips when I eat. What would two implants with snap-on attachments cost over 10 years, including maintenance, compared with a new denture?”
