Isotretinoin Blood Tests Are Not Blood Donation Clearance

Check donation restrictions separately from your treatment-monitoring appointments.

A blood-test appointment during isotretinoin treatment does not mean you can donate blood. Keep the two questions separate when planning appointments.

Monitoring and donation have different purposes

Dorset County Hospital1 describes blood tests to monitor people taking isotretinoin. Its leaflet also says not to donate blood during treatment or for one month after stopping.1

Completing a monitoring test does not override that restriction. Follow your dermatology team’s monitoring instructions and check donation eligibility with the donation service.

Ask about your own treatment dates

Try: “I take isotretinoin, or recently finished it. Here is my medicine name and last-treatment date. What donation restrictions apply, and what information do you need from my dermatology team?”

If the date is uncertain, say so and ask your team to help confirm it. After the stated restriction ends, check your individual eligibility with the donation service. Do not stop prescribed isotretinoin to make a donation appointment.

Skin, Head to Toe includes a Skin Log and visit script. Use them to keep treatment details and questions together for your dermatology team. See the book.
