Once the appointment is over, you may be looking closely at every change in the treated area. Get the aftercare instructions before leaving, while you can still ask the practitioner to explain them. Keep the contact number beside those instructions.
1. Which skin changes should I report?
Mayo Clinic1 describes mild skin-color changes, swelling and discomfort that usually settle within a few hours. Ask what is expected for your treated area and what comfort measures the practitioner recommends.1
Leeds’ hair-reduction leaflet tells patients to contact its laser team if blistering, scabbing or crusting develops. Get your own clinic’s contact instructions, including where to seek help outside office hours. Report concerns rather than waiting for the next booked session.2
When you call, explain what changed and when it started. If the practice asks for a photograph, follow its instructions for sending one.
2. Why can I still see hairs?
Treated hair does not disappear immediately. Mayo Clinic1 describes shedding over several days to weeks. Leeds advises leaving visible damaged hairs to fall out naturally rather than removing them. Ask how your team distinguishes expected shedding from regrowth at follow-up.12
Keep a note of the treatment date and the area treated. Bring the question to your next review instead of judging the whole course by the mirror the following morning.
3. What should change in my routine?
Aftercare needs practical instructions. Leeds advises treating skin gently and sets temporary restrictions on shaving, strenuous exercise, swimming, heat and fragranced products. Ask your practitioner when to resume each activity. Follow your treatment instructions.2
Sun protection also continues between appointments. Mayo advises protecting treated areas from sun exposure for six weeks or as directed, with daily broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. Leeds has additional instructions about when products can go back on the skin. Clarify the timing with your team.12
Mention a pool visit, outdoor event or exercise class already on your calendar. Write down any changes to those plans before you leave.
Hair, Everywhere includes a monthly Hair Log and a visit script. Use them to organize observations and follow-up questions alongside the laser team’s aftercare plan. See the book.
