Opening a Linzess Capsule: Applesauce, Water and the Beads
Bloating & DigestionArticleFollow the specified mixing method without chewing the beads. Keep the prescription’s meal timing too.

You have a Linzess prescription but struggle with the capsule. Bring the packet to a pharmacist and ask them to demonstrate the preparation you will use.
Applesauce: use the whole capsule
Empty all the beads onto one teaspoon of room temperature applesauce in a clean container. Swallow everything immediately without chewing. Do not save the mixture.1
Water: follow both pours
Put all the capsule’s beads into a clean cup with 30 mL of room temperature bottled water. Gently swirl for at least 20 seconds, then swallow the entire mixture immediately. Add another 30 mL of water to remaining beads, swirl for 20 seconds and swallow immediately. Do not store the mixture.1
The drug dissolves off the beads into water; the beads stay visible. The label says consuming every bead is unnecessary for the complete dose. Follow both pours, rather than waiting for the beads to disappear. Other foods and liquids have not been tested.1
Keep the meal timing on the plan
MedlinePlus2 instructs taking linaclotide on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before a meal, around the same time daily. Opening the capsule does not make the medicine a dose to mix into breakfast. Take the amount prescribed; do not take more or less on your own.2
For a feeding tube, ask the pharmacist or doctor for the applicable instructions. MedlinePlus2 describes tube administration separately. The oral cup method above is not a tube-feeding procedure.2
Say whether food and drinks are difficult too
NHS3 advice recommends getting professional advice before opening capsules or altering medicines. Its general pill-swallowing techniques should not be tried when swallowing food and drink is also difficult, because of choking risk. Tell the pharmacist or clinician about that broader problem instead of assuming a capsule-opening method resolves it.3
Try this: have the pharmacist check your routine
- Show the dispensing label and ask which preparation fits your prescription and swallowing difficulty.
- Ask them to demonstrate the clean container and measuring equipment with you.
- Write the agreed preparation, medicine time and meal time on your medication plan.
Keep the current Medication Guide with the prescription. MedlinePlus2 advises reading it and asking about anything unclear.2
Bring the medicine details to the constipation review
Bloated by Dinner, Chapter 7’s “What the Pharmacy Shelf Offers” section includes linaclotide among prescription options. Chapter 9’s visit script asks for every medicine and supplement and a clear next step. Use that preparation to explain the swallowing problem alongside your constipation history. See the book.
