Metal or Acrylic Partial Denture?Ask About Your Design
Breath & MouthArticleCompare the materials, then have your dentist explain suitability and visible clasps.

If your dentist proposes a removable partial denture, ask which design fits your situation. Leeds Teaching Hospitals describes metal-based and acrylic options; metal-based dentures are not suitable in every case.1
What differs in the materials?
| Option | What the Leeds guidance describes |
|---|---|
| Metal-based | A cobalt-and-chromium alloy framework, covered with gum-coloured plastic and plastic teeth; thinner and stronger than acrylic. |
| Acrylic | A denture made purely from plastic. |

What about the clips?
Both types may have metal clasps to hold the denture in place. Some clips may show when you smile or open your mouth, depending on their position.1
Ask: “Why does this design fit my situation? Where would the clasps sit, and which might be visible?”
Get your own design explained
Ask your dentist to show you the proposed design and explain the choice. The material description alone does not determine which denture is suitable for you.
