Missed Estrogen HRT: Check Which Form You Use
Menopause & HormonesArticleHave your pharmacist clarify the missed-dose directions for your exact prescribed product.

In this article
If you miss a scheduled dose of prescribed estrogen HRT, check your medicine leaflet and ask a pharmacist about unclear instructions. NHS1 guidance gives different missed-dose directions for tablets, gel or spray and for patches. Do not assume one form’s instructions apply to another.1
Which details should I have ready?
Have the product name, strength and form available, along with your prescribed schedule. Say when you last used it and what you missed. Include uncertainty rather than filling it in from memory.
Ask: “Can you check this product’s missed-dose directions with me and explain my next step?”
Should I add a dose to make up for it?
The NHS1 says never to take or use two estrogen doses together, or an extra dose to make up for a forgotten one.1
Have the pharmacist explain the instructions for your prescription, including your regular schedule afterward.
What if I keep forgetting?
NHS1 guidance suggests reminders and pharmacist advice.1 Ask what would help you follow your own medicine plan.
