Modafinil: Discuss Pregnancy Prevention Before Treatment
Sleep & NighttimeArticleAsk your prescriber how your contraception and pregnancy plans affect the treatment plan.

If you already take modafinil and pregnancy is possible or confirmed, contact your prescriber promptly. The UK MHRA says modafinil should not be used during pregnancy because it potentially increases the risk of birth defects.1
Before the prescription begins
If modafinil is proposed for narcolepsy, expect a pregnancy-prevention discussion. The MHRA says it may reduce the effectiveness of steroidal contraceptives, including oral contraceptives. Your own combination needs a professional plan.1
Have the exact names of your contraceptive products available. Tell the clinician about pregnancy plans.
Ask: “How does modafinil affect my current contraception, and what plan do I need before treatment?”
Clarify how long the plan applies
MHRA guidance requires effective contraception during treatment and for two months after stopping modafinil. Have your clinician explain the individual arrangements.1
Ask: “What should I do if treatment changes or I want to become pregnant?”
Discuss other narcolepsy treatment options with your doctor before stopping contraception. Follow the agreed instructions rather than changing either prescription yourself.1
