If you use thickened liquids for swallowing difficulties, ask your pharmacist or care team to check any polyethylene glycol (PEG) laxative alongside the exact thickener. Do not directly mix PEG laxatives with starch-based thickeners.1

Why the combination matters

The MHRA warns that mixing them can counteract the thickening and produce a thin, watery liquid. For someone with swallowing difficulties, this can increase aspiration risk, meaning liquid enters the airway.1

Bring both packages

Show the team the laxative, thickener and existing swallowing-care instructions. Ask: “Can you check these exact products and explain how my laxative should be given within my swallowing plan?”

The MHRA says thickener choice depends on individual swallowing and clinical needs. Ask for your own instructions before using the combination. Do not choose a replacement thickener or invent a mixing method from this article.1
