Hair Color During Pregnancy: Questions Before Your Salon Appointment

Tell the salon about your pregnancy and clarify testing instructions, even when the proposed dye is familiar.

If a familiar color appointment now brings new questions because you are pregnant, raise them before booking. You can ask about the proposed service without needing to decide every concern in the salon chair.

Start with the information the salon needs

You could say: “I’m pregnant, and I’d like to discuss the color service before booking. What product would you use, and what testing instructions should we clarify even if I’ve used it before?”1

Ask for the exact product name and written instructions so you have something specific to discuss. Keep the response with the appointment details rather than relying on your memory of a previous visit.

Bring the unresolved concern to your pregnancy care team

The NHS advises speaking with your midwife or doctor if you are unsure or worried about the potential risks of hair dye during pregnancy.1

You could ask: “I’m considering this salon color service. These are the product details. What should I clarify before deciding?”1

Write down the question you most want answered. If you receive instructions, keep them with the product information and ask who can clarify anything you do not understand.

Confirm what happens before you book

Ask the salon which details it still needs from you, who will answer the remaining questions and how to send any advice you have received. If the answer is incomplete, keep the appointment discussion open until you understand the next step.
