Rocking Beds for Sleep: Four Study Checks
Sleep & NighttimeArticleOne laboratory night improved some sleep measures, without faster sleep onset or better memory.

Before paying for a rocking bed, check whose sleep improved, which measurements changed and how long researchers followed participants. A motorized bed’s advertised movement should be compared with the apparatus used in the cited experiment.
Was this a study of women with menopausal insomnia?
The 2026 study analyzed 16 young adults, 11 women, with insomnia complaints and objectively poor sleep. After habituation, each had one rocking and one stationary laboratory night, counterbalanced at least seven days apart.1
It supplies no menopausal-insomnia treatment estimate.
What improved, and what did not?
Movement was 10.5 cm laterally, one cycle every four seconds. Scorers were masked; participants felt movement.1
The awake proportion of the sleep period fell 34%, relative to stationary sleep. Fragmentation, efficiency and sleep-quality ratings improved. Sleep-onset latency, total sleep time and deep-sleep duration did not significantly change. Memory performance did not improve in 15 tested.1
Did an older-adult experiment find the same thing?
A separate 2020 study analyzed 19 adults, including eight women, averaging 66.7 years old. It excluded people with insomnia and other sleep disorders. Participants had two stationary and two movement nights, with block order randomized.2
This apparatus used pendulum-like motion, selected for comfort, rather than the younger study’s lateral translation. Sleep efficiency, sleep-stage duration and sleep-onset measures showed no significant benefit.2
The studies differ in both population and motion. Their contrast cannot identify age as the reason for different findings. A comfortable movement is also insufficient evidence of a sleep treatment.
What would justify a purchase?
The 2026 authors reported Swiss National Science Foundation funding and no conflicts.1
Ask the seller for research on the actual movement settings, people with your sleep problem and repeated use at home. Check the return period and total delivery or collection cost before committing. One experimental rocking night cannot establish sustained benefit at home.
For persistent insomnia, NHLBI describes CBT-I as the usual first treatment, generally over six to eight weeks, available in person, by phone or online.3 A product purchase should not postpone that assessment and treatment discussion.
