Compare the jobs
| Question | Root canal treatment | Crown or other final restoration |
|---|---|---|
| What is being treated? | The pulp space inside the tooth.1 | The tooth’s restoration after treatment.2 |
| What happens? | The pulp is removed; canals are cleaned, filled and sealed.1 | The dentist places the planned crown or permanent restoration.2 |
| What should I confirm? | Who performs the treatment and when it is finished. | Which restoration is needed and when it will be placed. |
Ask how the appointments connect
The final restoration depends on the tooth and how much structure remains. Molars and premolars generally need crowns after root canal treatment; a crown is not required for every treated tooth. Ask your dentist to explain the choice for yours.2
Until the tooth is fully restored, avoid chewing on it as instructed by the dental team. Delays, damaged restorations or new decay can contribute to further problems. Confirm the next appointment before assuming the treatment sequence is finished.2
Write the clinician’s name beside each planned stage. Request a separate cost and scheduling explanation for each one so you can follow the plan.
Is It My Breath? includes a visit script and routine card. Use the script to organize dental questions and ask your dentist how the routine applies during treatment. See the book.
