Worried About the Rubber Dam During Root Canal Treatment?
Breath & MouthArticleExample words for discussing the protective sheet, communication and pauses before treatment starts.

In this article
If having a sheet across your mouth sounds difficult, tell the dentist before your root canal appointment begins. You can ask to see what they will use and discuss how you will communicate during treatment.
Ask for a demonstration
These are example words to adapt for your own conversation:
“I’m anxious about having my mouth covered. Could you show me the rubber dam before placing it and explain what I will feel?”
Tell the team which part worries you: the unfamiliar equipment, keeping your mouth open or being unable to speak easily. Ask them to explain the setup in words you understand.
Agree on communication before starting
“How should I signal if I need you to stop or if something feels wrong? Can we practice that signal before you begin?”
Ask the dentist to confirm how they will respond to your signal. If you have a concern about the proposed equipment, discuss it before placement rather than waiting until treatment is underway.
Understand the appointment plan
Leeds’ root canal appointment information says the dentist explains the treatment and checks that you still agree to proceed. More than one appointment may be needed.1
“What are you planning to complete today? Where might we pause, and what will happen at the next visit?”
Request the expected appointment length for your treatment and tell the team if that creates a practical difficulty. Before leaving, confirm the next stage, your care instructions and whom to contact with concerns.
Keep the questions ready
Is It My Breath? includes a visit script. Use it to collect the questions you want answered before dental treatment, including how to communicate when you need help.
