If the tattoo is not healing

Contact the tattooist and your healthcare professional if the area does not seem to be healing or you notice a rash near the tattoo, especially with fever. FDA1 also advises contacting your healthcare professional about concerns.1

The seal does not settle safety

FDA1 reports that even unopened, sealed tattoo inks can harbor bacteria or other microorganisms that cause infections. An ink may be contaminated even when its label says it is sterile. There is no reliable way to establish its safety without testing.1

This does not mean every sealed bottle is contaminated. It means the seal alone cannot guarantee that it is not.1

Keep product details available

If you develop an infection or another reaction, tell your healthcare professional and notify the tattoo artist. Ask the artist for the ink’s brand, color and lot or batch number, including details of any diluent, to help the team investigate.1
