If sialendoscopy has been proposed for Sjögren’s dry mouth, take the referral letter and your current mouth-care plan to the specialist. Describe what dryness interrupts, such as meals, speech or sleep, and ask which change would justify the procedure for you.

Check remaining function

The trial randomized 51 people with Sjögren’s and remaining salivary function. Its 60-week analysis included 45 completers, comparing saline irrigation, saline plus triamcinolone and no procedure.1

Separate flow from comfort

Unstimulated whole-saliva flow followed different courses between groups (P=.028). However, no individual follow-up visit showed a significant flow difference versus controls in corrected post hoc comparisons.1

The secondary Xerostomia Inventory, scored 11–55, measures perceived dryness; lower is better. At 60 weeks, means were 39.6 with saline, 38.9 with saline/steroid and 47.1 with no procedure; both treated groups differed significantly from controls.1

Discuss the procedure

Treatment used general anaesthesia. Controls knew they received no procedure; there was no sham. Not every duct was accessible. Added steroid benefit was not established. Karl Storz loaned equipment. These findings do not demonstrate gland regeneration.1

Oxford’s general procedure leaflet describes pain, swelling, infection, duct narrowing and gland or duct damage among the risks. It discusses local or general anaesthesia. Its blockage-treatment information should not be read as a Sjögren’s success rate.2

Ask the surgeon which glands they intend to treat, what happens if a duct cannot be entered and whether medication will be added. Confirm your anaesthetic, preparation, transport and aftercare instructions with the treating service. Ask whom to contact for unexpected symptoms and when the team will review the result.2

Keep dental protection in place

NIDCR explains that Sjögren’s dry mouth increases the risk of cavities, tooth loss and mouth infections. Its guidance includes saliva substitutes, prescription saliva stimulants and regular dental care. Ask your dentist whether fluoride rinse, nighttime gel or varnish belongs in your prevention plan. There is currently no cure for Sjögren’s disease.3

Keep the specialist’s treatment goal beside your dental prevention schedule. Ask how comfort and saliva production will each be assessed, what happens if benefit fades and which ongoing care remains necessary. Do not assume a procedure replaces those appointments.

Is It My Breath? includes “Supporting Saliva,” covering comfort measures, prescription-treatment discussions and the dentist conversation about extra fluoride. Its Breath Log can help you record what changed without adding several new mouth products at once.

This article is educational and does not replace assessment by your own dental and medical team. Sialendoscopy and duct irrigation require specialist assessment; the study is not a guide to performing irrigation or changing medicines yourself.
