Sialogram or Sialendoscopy: Understanding Two Salivary-Duct Appointments

Compare X-ray imaging with a camera examination that may also allow treatment.

If you are being assessed for a salivary-duct problem, the appointment names can be hard to remember when you call the unit or explain the plan to someone at home. Ask the team to write down the exact procedure name and the question it is intended to answer.

What changes between the appointments?

How is the duct examined?Contrast dye enters through a small tube; X-rays record the ducts and gland.A tiny camera inside a flexible tube looks within a salivary-gland duct.
What can it contribute?Images may help establish a diagnosis or decide further treatment.Examination may identify a cause of gland pain and swelling.
Can treatment be attempted?Dorset describes an imaging examination.Instruments may remove stones or debris, and ducts can be washed or widened.

This comparison uses Dorset’s sialogram leaflet and Oxford’s sialendoscopy leaflet.12

Ask why the proposed appointment fits your assessment. If both names appear in your care plan, ask what the team needs from each and how one result might affect the next decision. You do not need to choose a procedure from the names alone.

Confirm what may happen during the visit

For sialendoscopy, ask which treatment, if any, the surgeon expects to attempt. You could say: “Is the main purpose to look inside the duct, treat a known problem, or decide what treatment is possible?”

Oxford explains that treatment can be unsuccessful and continuing symptoms may lead to consideration of gland removal.2

Ask what the plan would be if the intended treatment could not be completed. Have the team explain the expected benefits, risks and alternatives in your circumstances before you consent. If you have had previous imaging, ask how those findings shaped the recommendation.

Get instructions for the appointment you actually have

Oxford describes sialendoscopy under local or general anaesthesia.2

Confirm the arrangement for your own procedure. Ask about medicines, food and drink instructions, transport, support afterward and time away from work. Have the unit clarify anything unclear before changing a medicine or preparation schedule.

Tell the team about previous difficulty with a procedure or anaesthesia that you want discussed. Ask for the aftercare instructions and the symptoms that should prompt contact, including whom to reach outside normal hours.

Ask who will explain the findings

Dorset says its sialogram results go back to the referring clinician.1

Ask who will explain your result, how that discussion will be arranged and when to contact the service if you have not heard. If you have sialendoscopy, ask how the findings and any treatment performed will be recorded and shared with you.

At the follow-up, return to the reason for the referral: what has been answered, what remains uncertain and what happens if symptoms continue? Keep the next step and contact details with the appointment paperwork.
