Vibrating Capsules for Constipation: The Phase-Three Trial
Bloating & DigestionArticleAn eight-week comparison.

Who was studied
The eight-week trial compared five weekly vibrating capsules with nonvibrating capsules in 312 adults, mostly women, with chronic idiopathic constipation despite laxatives. IBS-C and pelvic-floor disorders were excluded.1
What improved
In the published analysis, 64/163 (39.3%) versus 33/149 (22.1%) gained ≥1 additional complete spontaneous bowel movement weekly in ≥6/8 weeks; 37/163 (22.7%) versus 17/149 (11.4%) gained ≥2. Complete meant feeling empty, without manual help or rescue medication within 48 hours. Most participants did not reach either threshold.1
Another 37 received a mode dropped at interim; enrollment increased. Missing diary days counted zero; under six weeks of records meant nonresponse. Eleven percent felt vibration. Eight weeks cannot establish long-term safety. Vibrant funded the study; authors reported company ties.1
Before a prescription
Vibrant is a US prescription device for adults whose chronic idiopathic constipation persists despite recommended laxative doses for at least a month. A pod activates each capsule before swallowing. Follow the supplied instructions and prescribed schedule.2
Contraindications include suspected obstruction, significant gastroparesis, swallowing disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is MR unsafe: before MRI, the physician must verify capsule expulsion by abdominal X-ray. Discuss implanted devices. Stop further capsules and contact the physician immediately for black/bloody stools, unusual or persistent abdominal pain, nausea/vomiting, or suspected failure to pass a capsule. Use beyond eight weeks requires reassessment.2
The American Gastroenterological Association’s 2026 expert advice considers a vibrating capsule a reasonable adjunct for refractory constipation. Most patients should have anorectal testing and, when indicated, pelvic-floor biofeedback before that label. Review secondary causes and prior medication trials with the clinician.3
Bloated by Dinner explains the main laxative families and two pharmacy questions: which family is this, and how long is it intended for? Bring your previous products and treatment dates to the device discussion. See the book.
