You put on a sleep mask, turn onto your side and suddenly the pillow is pushing the padding into your face. Loosen the strap and a little line of light appears beside your nose. Tighten it again and you’re back where you started.
That is the buying question with Manta: can you get darkness and a comfortable fit at the same time? The Original gives you room to adjust the cups separately. The Pro adds a design aimed more directly at side sleeping. Whether that upgrade deserves your money depends on what bothers you about the mask you already have.
What is different about the Original Manta Sleep Mask?
The Original has two hollow, detachable eye cups that you can reposition on its adjustable head strap. Instead of lying flat across your eyelids, the cups create space around the eyes. Manta advertises complete blackout and no pressure on the eyelids or lashes. Those are design aims; the seal and comfort still depend on fit. 1
The brand lists modal fabric for the cups, polycotton on the strap’s outside and polyester velour inside. This is the Original fabric model, not Manta’s separate silk mask. 1
The useful feature is the ability to move each cup. If a fixed mask seems made for someone else’s eye spacing, you have more ways to adjust this one. You can change the position of one side without dragging the whole mask across your nose.
That also means some setup. If you want to pull something from a drawer, put it on and forget about it, consider whether you’re willing to spend a few minutes finding the placement that feels right.
Is the Original good for side sleepers, or is the Pro better?
The Pro is the more targeted design for a face resting against a pillow. Manta’s comparison describes the Original’s cups as having more material between your face and the pillow. The Pro’s cups taper thinly at the temples, with a compressible edge intended to flatten during side sleeping and expand when you change position. 2
The Pro also has an angled strap designed to sit above the ears, an anti-slip gel detail and perforated foam and mesh. These are concrete construction differences. They don’t guarantee that it will stay comfortable on every head, or that you won’t feel warm wearing it. 2
If your existing problem is a bulky cup pressing into your cheek or temple, the upgrade has a clear reason behind it. If your problem is light getting past a fixed nose gap, the Original’s movable cups may already provide the adjustment you want.
Think about how you actually lie down. A mask that feels lovely while you sit on the edge of the bed can feel different once your head sinks into a pillow. Check both sides, your usual pillow and the way you roll between positions. A short comfortable moment on your back doesn’t settle a side-sleeping purchase.
How much more does the Pro cost?
On October 10, 2026, Manta’s US listings showed $39 for the Original and $85 for the Pro. The upgrade therefore costs $46 more before shipping and tax, a little over twice the Original’s price. These are dated listed prices, not a promise about the next promotion. 1 2
| Buying question | Original | Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Main reason to consider it | Adjustable cups at the lower price | A design aimed at reducing bulk against a side sleeper’s pillow |
| Question to settle first | Does the cup placement solve your light gap comfortably? | Does the thinner temple area solve the pressure you dislike? |
| Reason to pause | You already dislike substantial padding around your eyes | You’re paying extra without a specific fit problem to solve |
The published US standard shipping charge is $7 on orders below $105, with free shipping at $105 or more. For a single mask at those listed prices, that means approximately $46 for the Original or $92 for the Pro before tax, assuming standard US delivery and no discount. 8
Don’t add accessories you don’t need just to cross a shipping threshold. Spending more to avoid $7 shipping only helps if you wanted those extras in the first place.
Why does light leak around the nose?
A gap can mean the cups need a different position, rather than that the entire strap needs to be tighter. Manta’s fitting guide says to detach the cups, follow their orientation tags where present, then adjust their spacing, height and angle. The eyes should sit in the centers of the cups. The strap should secure the mask comfortably; loosen it if it causes discomfort. 3
Start by changing one thing at a time. Move a cup slightly, check the gap, then decide whether that change helped. Changing the strap, both cups and the angle together makes it harder to know what solved the problem.
Once you’re comfortable, lie down again. If the seal works upright but opens when the pillow pushes the mask, that is relevant to the purchase. You don’t need to accept painful tightness to satisfy a blackout claim.
Also decide how much darkness you actually need. A tiny visible edge may be annoying to one person and irrelevant to another. The point is to make your sleeping environment comfortable, not to win an adjustment contest at bedtime.
Will it touch long eyelashes or extensions?
The hollow cups are meant to leave space over the eyelids and lashes. That makes this design worth considering if you dislike a flat mask resting directly on them. It isn’t a guarantee for every lash length or extension style. 1
Check the space in your usual sleeping position, not just while your head is upright. If a cup shifts or compresses against your pillow, the clearance you noticed while sitting may change.
For extensions, follow your lash professional’s care advice as well. There is no reason to assume an eye mask replaces those instructions because its product description mentions lash room. If you feel contact you dislike, adjust the cup or choose another shape.
Does research show that a Manta mask improves deep sleep?
The eye-mask research doesn’t establish that claim for this product. A paper in the March 2023 issue of Sleep studied healthy adults aged 18–35 sleeping at home with light blocked or in control conditions. Its first experiment retained 89 participants before task-specific exclusions. Some next-day learning and reaction-time results favored wearing a mask. 5
The follow-up experiment did not find significant differences in the measured sleep-stage structure. The studies didn’t establish that Manta’s Original or Pro increases deep sleep, treats a sleep disorder or outperforms a cheaper mask. Participants also slept with curtains or shutters open, which matters when thinking about a bedroom that is already dark. 5
There is a sensible everyday reason to reduce unwanted light. NHLBI advises keeping a bedroom quiet, cool and dark, and removing light and sound distractions for daytime sleep after shift work. An eye mask can be one part of that setup. 6
Buy for the light you want to block and the fit you can tolerate. A customer’s sleep-app screenshot doesn’t tell you what your own sleep stages will do.
Will it help if you work nights or your partner reads in bed?
These are situations where a personal light barrier may be useful. You can cover your eyes without needing the whole room to match your preference. That is especially practical when another person wants a light on or you’re sleeping away from home.
But identify everything waking you. A mask won’t resolve a noisy room, interruptions, an uncomfortable temperature or too little time set aside for sleep. If the mask helps with one issue, you can still need to address the others.
For shift work, persistent difficulty sleeping during the day or adapting to the schedule deserves a discussion with a clinician, as NHLBI advises. 6 For long-term insomnia, NHLBI describes cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia as the usual first treatment option. A more expensive mask isn’t a substitute for that assessment or treatment. 7
Can you use the Original with CPAP?
Check the exact combination rather than assuming universal compatibility. Manta’s FAQ says adjustable cups provide flexibility, but the many different CPAP mask models make it difficult to promise that every pairing will work. The company recommends comparing the product photos with your CPAP mask. 10
The practical question is whether both products fit comfortably at once. Look at where the CPAP frame crosses the bridge of your nose and where both sets of straps will sit. Ask your sleep-care team about a pairing that interferes with the prescribed equipment; don’t compromise that equipment’s fit to accommodate a light-blocking accessory.
Is it suitable after eye surgery?
Ask your surgical team before using it during recovery. A soft sleep mask and a prescribed protective eye shield serve different purposes. The FDA explains that the shield used after LASIK protects against rubbing, pressure and accidental contact while the flap heals. 11
“No eye pressure” in a retail description isn’t clearance to replace your shield or ignore postoperative instructions. This purchase can wait until your team tells you what is appropriate for your eyes.
Can you wash the Original in the washing machine?
Yes. Manta’s care guide includes the Original and Pro among its machine-washable models. Put the strap and cups in a laundry bag, use a cold delicate cycle with mild detergent, then remove the cups and let everything air-dry flat. Gently squeeze rather than wringing, and don’t tumble-dry. 4
Keep those instructions with the exact model you buy. The same guide lists different care requirements for other Manta variants, including the weighted, cooling, steam and sound models. 4
Plan for drying time. If you rely on the mask every night, washing it right before bedtime may leave you without a dry one. Check the current order contents before assuming a laundry bag or other accessory is included; using a bag for care and receiving one in the box are separate questions.
What happens if it doesn’t fit comfortably?
Manta’s direct-store refund policy describes a 60-day money-back guarantee. Contact its customer team for a prepaid return label. The item must come back in good condition and its original packaging. Paid original shipping isn’t refunded. Keep the box while you decide whether the fit works. 9
The published warranty for non-electronic products is six months from purchase and provides the same product as a replacement after the company confirms the issue. That is separate from the initial return decision. 9
Read the exchange conditions before choosing that route: one exchange per order, an item of the same or lower price, customer-paid shipping, and no refund eligibility after requesting an exchange. The policy also gives seven days to send the original item back once the label is created. 9
Check the terms attached to your actual seller, outlet listing or special promotion. Don’t assume a marketplace purchase follows the direct-store process, or that every discounted listing carries identical conditions.
Is the Original Manta Sleep Mask worth buying?
The Original is a reasonable option when adjustable cup placement is what you’re missing. It gives you more ways to work around a nose gap or eye spacing without immediately paying for the higher-priced model.
The Pro deserves the closer look when pressure against the pillow is your main complaint. The upgrade is easier to justify when you can name the fit problem its design addresses. It is harder to justify on a general promise of better sleep.
If your current inexpensive mask already blocks the light comfortably, you don’t need to replace it because another one has more enthusiastic marketing. If neither Manta model feels comfortable after adjustment, returning it is a more useful decision than forcing yourself to sleep in it.
