Abdominal Ultrasound Prep: Which Instructions Apply to Your Appointment?
Bloating & DigestionArticleClarify the booked scan, food and drink directions, and any support you need before following advice meant for another appointment.

In this article
If your abdominal ultrasound letter says to fast, but another scan guide talks about a full bladder, you may wonder which instruction you are supposed to follow. Contact the radiology service with your own appointment details. Ask it to clarify the preparation before trying to combine advice from different scans.
Is every ultrasound prepared for the same way?
No. The NHS1 says the hospital or clinic should tell you what preparation is needed. Its examples include bladder preparation, and it distinguishes external from internal examinations. The word “ultrasound” alone does not identify all the instructions for your booked visit.1
Read the examination name from your letter when you contact the service. Confirm that you are asking about the external abdominal scan that is booked for you, including any other examination planned at the same visit.
What does fasting mean for this appointment?
Guy’s and St Thomas’ abdominal ultrasound information gives food and drink instructions for its service. Ask your own radiology team to specify what you may eat or drink and the relevant times. Ask whether bladder preparation applies too. Do not extend a fast or add a drinking schedule yourself.2
Write the answer beside the appointment time. If a letter and a telephone explanation appear to disagree, read both back and ask the service to confirm the current instructions in writing. You do not have to solve that discrepancy by guessing.
What if following the preparation is difficult?
Tell the team beforehand. Guy’s specifically addresses appointment planning for people with type 1 diabetes. Ask your own service how your health needs affect preparation and timing; that local example is not an instruction to reschedule every appointment. Do not change prescribed medicines from this article.2
Explain the practical difficulty clearly, and ask whom to speak to if the first person cannot answer your question. Keep any medicine instructions with the preparation plan supplied by your team.
Can I arrange support before arriving?
Guy’s asks patients needing a hoist, transport or a translator to contact radiology. Tell your own service about access or communication needs before the visit and confirm its arrangements.2
Check the location and contact details on your letter while making those arrangements. Keep the clarified instructions together so you can find them on the day.
