X-Ray Evacuation Proctogram: Ask About Privacy Before the Test
Bloating & DigestionArticleDiscuss privacy, positioning and the steps your own imaging team proposes.

If the idea of emptying your bowel while images are taken feels embarrassing, start the conversation before the appointment. Tell the imaging team which part worries you, rather than leaving it to guess. Write down the answer so you do not have to remember it while feeling anxious.
A local example of the examination
Rotherham’s August 2024 information describes barium paste placed in the rectum, followed by moving onto a toilet beside the X-ray machine. Staff explain when to empty the paste while images are taken. It describes a privacy screen and a radiology nurse present throughout. These are that service’s arrangements; confirm your unit’s plan.1
Ask the booking team where to direct questions about the examination itself. Keep that contact with your letter. If you are unsure whether the letter describes an X-ray or MRI appointment, ask the unit to confirm the test name before discussing its steps.
Make the privacy question specific
You could say: “Who will be present, what privacy arrangements apply and how will you explain each step?”1
Add the concern you most want addressed in your own words. You might prefer to raise it in a phone conversation rather than at the reception desk. Ask whether that can be arranged; keep a note of any agreed discussion.
Raise positioning difficulties beforehand
Rotherham asks patients to contact radiology in advance if lying on their left side would be difficult. Tell your own unit about positioning or support concerns and ask what arrangements it can offer.1
Do not assume a request has reached the right person just because it appears in another appointment’s notes. Confirm whom you spoke with and whether anything remains to be arranged.
Keep the result discussion in the plan
Rotherham sends results to the referring healthcare professional for discussion. Ask your team who will explain your findings and how to contact them if the expected message does not arrive.1
