Capsule Endoscopy or Gastroscopy: What Can Each Examine?
Bloating & DigestionArticleA swallowed camera and an upper endoscope cover different areas and have different capabilities.

If swallowing a camera sounds easier than having a scope, ask what the clinician needs to examine. Comfort matters, but the investigation also has to answer the question behind the referral. The two tests do not do the same job.
What a capsule provides
A small camera travels through the digestive tract and sends images to a recorder. It usually passes out in a bowel movement. Standard capsule endoscopy cannot take tissue samples or treat a finding; an abnormal area may require another investigation.1
Tell the team about swallowing difficulty, prior bowel blockage or narrowing and digestive surgery. A capsule can become retained in a narrowed area. The team may recommend additional checks before the camera test.1
What gastroscopy adds
A flexible endoscope passes through the mouth into the upper digestive tract. Instruments can pass through it to collect samples or carry out treatment. If sedation is used, arrange transport and accompanying support according to the center’s instructions.2
Ask whether the proposed examination includes biopsies, even if the lining appears normal. The answer should refer to your reason for testing.
Get the preparation for your test
Follow the facility’s eating, drinking and medication instructions. After capsule endoscopy, do not have an MRI until the team has confirmed that the capsule has left your body.1
Request the result appointment or contact arrangements before leaving. Keep the report with your earlier investigations so the next conversation starts with the findings.
