3 Questions About a Raised Fecal Calprotectin Result
Bloating & DigestionArticleAsk what the result shows and which follow-up is planned.

Put the result date beside the symptoms you had when you supplied the stool sample. Bring that record to the conversation about what happens next.
Three questions for the result review
- What question was this test meant to answer? It can help assess active intestinal inflammation, including in inflammatory bowel disease. Ask how the result fits the reason your clinician ordered it.1
- Do I need a repeat sample or another investigation? The test is sensitive and can sometimes be falsely raised. Ask the clinician to explain the planned next step and when it should happen.1
- How should I collect the next sample? Get instructions for the container your service supplies. Keeping the stool sample out of toilet water matters because contamination can affect the result. Follow your own laboratory’s labeling and return instructions.1
Keep the result in context
Make a dated list of your symptoms, the tests already performed and the follow-up appointments arranged. Ask for an explanation of any term on the report you do not understand. Write the clinician’s answer beside the term so you can refer to it later.
If a repeat test is ordered, confirm who will review it and how you will receive the result. Avoid applying another service’s cutoffs or collection instructions to your own report.
