4 Findings About Cetirizine Scalp Solutions for Hair Loss
HairArticleWomen's trials, a newer mixed-sex study and a small male pilot give different reasons to question regrowth claims.

Adding cetirizine did not clearly beat minoxidil in the Cairo trial
66 women aged 20 to 50 received 5% minoxidil each morning, plus 1% cetirizine or matching vehicle each evening for 24 weeks. The final analysis included 53 women.1
Hair density increased in both groups. Some measures improved within the cetirizine group, including early crown-hair thickness, but the main between-group analyses did not demonstrate superior growth. Blinded photographic assessments also found no significant difference. Some patient ratings favored cetirizine.1
Improvement from a starting measurement does not, by itself, show that an added ingredient helped. This trial had no cetirizine-only group.1
Cetirizine alone performed worse on hair density in another women’s trial
A 2023 trial2 randomized 60 women to 1% cetirizine or 2% minoxidil for six months. Its published abstract reports that minoxidil was superior for hair density in the per-protocol analysis. Hair-loss severity ratings improved with both treatments, but that does not establish equivalent regrowth.2
Dropout attributed to adverse effects was 10% with cetirizine and 6.6% with minoxidil. The abstract supplies no numerical density-effect estimate or detailed adverse-event breakdown, limiting how precisely those results can be interpreted here.2
The September 2026 add-on paper used scores and included few women
This 16-week study included 62 people, only 14 women. Everyone used 5% minoxidil twice daily; half also used 1% cetirizine daily. Density, diameter and photographic scores did not differ significantly between groups. Satisfaction favored the combination.3
These were seven-point assessments, not precise digital hair-count measurements. Treatment allocation followed odd or even national identification numbers, making assignments predictable. The combination group also had an extra application without a matching vehicle in the comparison group. Those limits matter when interpreting satisfaction and extending the findings to women.3
A small male pilot separated counted hairs from visible change
A report first published in December 2025 enrolled ten men using 1% cetirizine daily for 16 weeks; nine completed it. Mean hair count in a marked 1 cm² scalp area rose from 139.6 to 163.4.4
Yet blinded photographs showed no visible change in six of the nine completers. There was no comparison group. This is preliminary male evidence, with different outcomes giving different impressions of improvement.4
Take the formulation and the comparison to the appointment
Ask whether the proposal is cetirizine alone or an addition to minoxidil, which study supports it, and how progress and irritation will be recorded. Bring the exact formula and your current scalp-product list.
AAD advises confirming the cause of thinning with a dermatologist. It identifies topical minoxidil as FDA-approved for female pattern hair loss and says judging its effect takes about six to 12 months. It also advises avoiding minoxidil during pregnancy, while planning pregnancy and while breastfeeding.5
The “What to Ask For” section of Hair, Everywhere includes questions about diagnosis, evidence, combinations and follow-up. Our topical minoxidil guide covers that treatment separately.
These studies concern topical formulations for pattern hair loss. They do not establish oral allergy tablets as hair-growth treatment. Study regimens are not instructions for self-treatment.
