Latanoprost Acid for Thinning Hair: Four Checks on the Women's Pilot

Before treating a new hair-count result as a reason to change products, check the comparison. This pilot’s most important number may be the size of its vehicle group.
Count the comparison participants
The 2026 Warsaw report randomized 29 women to latanoprost acid 0.01%, 0.05% or 0.1%, or vehicle, used daily for six months. Only two received vehicle. Twenty-four finished. Efficacy analyses compared active concentrations, without establishing a vehicle advantage.1
The 0.05% group gained an observed mean 23.5 hairs/cm², but hair-count changes did not differ significantly between active concentrations. That does not establish a winning concentration. Two participants stopped because of headache or increased shedding. Authors disclosed patent and company interests. BioResearch Pharma supported laboratory work, not the human study.1
Separate publication from registration
The current NCT07412587 record gives an actual start of July 8, 2015, and completion of July 8, 2016. The study was first submitted February 2, 2026, and first posted February 17, 2026. This was retrospective registration, years after completion, rather than a newly completed 2026 trial1.2
That timing limits what the registry can independently confirm about outcomes chosen before enrollment. It does not by itself show that the investigators changed an outcome. Ask whether a claim comes from a prospectively specified comparison or an exploratory analysis.2
Keep the older men’s trial separate
A 2012 pilot enrolled 16 young men with mild androgenetic alopecia. Each used latanoprost 0.1% and placebo on two scalp minizones for 24 weeks. Hair density improved more at the treated site. That is a within-person comparison of small areas, not 16 people receiving drug versus another 16 receiving placebo.3
Its authors limited applicability beyond young men. It tested latanoprost, not the acid form in the women’s pilot. Do not pool these results for women after menopause.13
Check the ingredient and licensed route
Xalatan is latanoprost 0.005% eye solution, labeled in the US to lower eye pressure in open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Its label describes latanoprost as a prodrug converted to the active acid after absorption through the cornea. That eye formulation is not the women’s experimental scalp preparation.4
The label warns that iris pigmentation can be permanent, alongside eyelid pigmentation and eyelash changes. Those warnings concern eye treatment; they do not supply a measured adverse-event rate for scalp use. Do not convert the trial percentages into instructions for repurposing an eye-drop bottle.4
Take the exact proposal to the appointment
Ask for the ingredient, concentration, vehicle, intended diagnosis and follow-up plan in writing. If several active ingredients are proposed together, ask which evidence supports the combination and how a new symptom would be investigated.
The “What to Ask For” section of Hair, Everywhere pairs the treatment discussion with questions about diagnosis, approval status, pregnancy plans, monitoring and when to judge progress. Bring the proposed formula and dated photographs to that conversation. Our oral versus topical minoxidil article examines a different, direct treatment comparison in women.
These study concentrations are research details, not mixing or application instructions. Discuss any proposed scalp prescription with the clinician and dispensing pharmacist.
