If you take the contraceptive pill and have surgery planned, ask the preoperative team for instructions about your exact prescription. Keep the medicine plan with your operation papers.1

Start with the product

Try: “I take this contraceptive pill. What instructions apply before my operation, and who will give me the written plan?”

Dudley’s leaflet describes continuing the pill for most procedures, with possible changes before major or leg surgery. That is a local example; your team should explain the plan for your own operation.1

Ask about pregnancy protection

Try: “Do medicines used around my operation affect my pill? Will I need additional contraception, and who will explain those instructions?”

Dudley advises pill users to ask about additional protection because some medicines reduce its effectiveness afterward.1

Clarify any restart instructions

Try: “If my team advises pausing a medicine, who decides when I restart?”

The leaflet emphasizes professional advice about restarting stopped medicines. Contact your own preoperative team if instructions are missing or a new medicine has been started.1
