Folic Acid for Folate Deficiency: Ask What the B12 Check Shows
Bloating & DigestionArticleIf folic acid is proposed for folate-deficiency anaemia, ask how your B12 assessment fits the plan.

If your clinician has proposed or prescribed folic acid for folate-deficiency anaemia, ask what your vitamin B12 assessment shows.1
Why B12 belongs in this conversation
NHS1 guidance says the GP checks B12 levels before folic acid treatment. Folic acid can improve symptoms enough to mask an underlying B12 deficiency. If that deficiency remains undetected and untreated, it could affect the nervous system. Feeling better therefore does not answer the B12 question on its own.1
Ask about your results and the cause
Try: “What did my B12 check show? What is causing my folate deficiency, and how does that affect the treatment you recommend?”
Treatment depends on the cause. Have your clinician explain your own prescription and any further blood tests needed to check that treatment is working.1
Ask: “Who will explain the results and tell me what happens next?”1
Bloated by Dinner includes a Test It list and visit script. Use them to organize questions for the clinician reviewing your results. See the book.
