Fructanase for Bloating: What the Human Trials Tested
Bloating & DigestionArticleBreaking down fructans in a digestion model, tolerating a supplement for four weeks and feeling better after an inulin challenge answer different questions.

An enzyme label may cite a digestion experiment, a safety trial or a symptom trial. Before paying for fructanase or inulinase for bloating, check which kind of evidence supports the claim on your product.
The digestion model showed a chemical effect
A 2023 experiment tested microbial inulinase under simulated digestive conditions. Researchers measured its ability to break down fructans in inulin, garlic and mixed food preparations. Increased free fructose in the samples provided evidence of that breakdown.1
The study included a meal containing black beans, Brussels sprouts, onions and garlic. That makes its substrates more varied than purified fiber alone. It still measured what happened to food in a laboratory system, without people reporting pain, bloating or whether they could comfortably finish dinner.1
The work was fully sponsored by BIO-CAT, whose employees authored it. The company participated in the experimental design, analysis and publication.1
The four-week trial primarily assessed safety
A 2024 randomized, double-blind trial assigned 60 healthy adults to inulinase or placebo. Following a two-week placebo run-in, participants took their assigned capsules twice daily with meals for four weeks. The enzyme group received 2,000 inulinase activity units daily. Fifty-eight people completed the study.2
Five of 30 enzyme recipients and eight of 30 placebo recipients reported adverse events during treatment. There were no clinically meaningful between-group differences in the blood biomarkers assessed, and no significant differences in changes in overall gastrointestinal symptom scores or their domains.2
This was short-term tolerability evidence in healthy adults. It did not establish that the supplement treats IBS. BIO-CAT sponsored the trial; authors included company employees and staff of the contracted research organization.2
The newer meal challenge had mixed results
A 2026 randomized, double-blind crossover trial involved 30 healthy adults, averaging 38.6 years old. Each condition used 25 g inulin mixed into 40 g oatmeal, with either one fructanase capsule or placebo. Symptoms were followed for 24 hours; breath hydrogen and methane were measured for eight.3
The maximum overall abdominal symptom score during hours 0–8 did not significantly differ between conditions, with p=0.13. Some individual symptoms improved. During hours 8–24, overall abdominal symptoms, bloating, abdominal pain and flatulence were lower with fructanase. Breath hydrogen and methane outcomes did not significantly differ.3
That is evidence of some symptom benefit after a concentrated inulin challenge. It does not establish less fermentation, sustained IBS control or equivalent results from another enzyme blend. The authors call for trials in people with gastrointestinal symptoms such as IBS.3
BIO-CAT funded the study and supplied the products. Its disclosed roles included study design, interpretation, writing and the decision to publish, though it did not collect the data.3
Match the enzyme to the question
Lactase targets lactose; alpha-galactosidase targets galacto-oligosaccharides, or GOS. Monash’s research dietitian discusses their usefulness after people have identified the relevant sensitivity. Evidence for one enzyme and carbohydrate cannot establish the effectiveness of a different combination.4
For a fructanase purchase, ask which ingredient was studied, whether the trial enrolled people with your symptoms, and whether the outcome was chemical breakdown, tolerability or symptom relief. A claim about an enzyme class is insufficient detail for comparing two formulations.
Monash advises discussing enzyme therapy with a healthcare professional. If another enzyme is tried, its advice is to change one thing at a time and monitor symptoms. That makes the result easier to interpret than starting a supplement while also removing several foods.4
Bloated by Dinner includes “The Visit Script,” which asks readers to bring their Belly Clock, list medicines and supplements, and record foods they have cut out. Add the exact product, dates and symptoms to that account before discussing whether an enzyme trial fits your situation. See the book.
This article assesses selected fructanase and inulinase studies. It does not diagnose a food intolerance, recommend a brand or establish a personal dose. The human studies described enrolled healthy adults, not a treatment population with IBS.
