If you have concerns after surgery, contact your surgical team promptly. Urgent concerns should not wait for a routine visit.1
Ask what the proposed operation includes
Gloucestershire’s February 2025 leaflet describes Hartmann’s reversal as reconnecting the bowel to the remaining rectum. Depending on the join, a different temporary ileostomy may be needed; the consultant discusses this before surgery.1
“Does my proposed reversal include a temporary ileostomy? Please explain why that might be needed in my operation.”1
Write down the answer in the team’s words. Leave room beneath it for the explanation you want to revisit. You do not have to translate unfamiliar terms into a polished question before bringing them up.
Ask who will explain stoma care
The leaflet says stoma nurses discuss differences in looking after an ileostomy. Ask who will explain the care involved if that is part of your plan.1
Keep a separate page for names and contact details. If several people speak with you, note who answered each question so you can return to the right person with an unfinished conversation.
Discuss risks and alternatives
Reversal is a major operation. Ask your surgeon to explain your risks, alternatives and expected bowel changes; the leaflet notes that bowel function may not fully return to normal.1
Bloated by Dinner includes a Test It list and visit script. Use them to organize your questions and record the team’s explanation. Explore the digestion playbook.
