Seek emergency medical help for breathing difficulties, a seizure or an irregular heartbeat after using a numbing product. FDA’s1 March 2024 warning describes these serious injuries when high-concentration lidocaine products are absorbed through the skin.1

Do not cover the treated skin

FDA1 advises against wrapping skin treated with OTC pain-relief products in plastic wrap or other dressings. Covering treated skin with any material can increase the chance of serious side effects. Its warning includes products marketed for laser hair removal.1

Ask before preparing at home

Tell the laser clinic which product you planned to use and ask it to clarify preparation instructions before applying it.

Try: “I was considering this numbing product before laser hair removal. Can you review the exact product and explain your preparation instructions?”
