How Much Facial Hair Is Normal for Women? The Score Doctors Use
HairArticleDoctors judge excess facial and body hair in women with a 0-to-36 score built from nine body areas. In 633 women at routine job physicals, 22% scored 3 or more, and most of them already thought of themselves as hairy. Where the line for 'too much' sits depends on ancestry: a 2025 study of 9,829 women put it anywhere from 4 to 8. Here is how the score works and when hair growth needs a check.

A few dark chin hairs are common. A spreading beard pattern can be a sign of a hormone problem. Doctors use a score to tell where one ends and the other begins.
The score
Hirsutism means coarse, dark hair growing in a male-like pattern on a woman.1 It’s usually linked to androgens, the “male” hormones, and the most common cause is PCOS, now also called PMOS.2
The standard tool is the modified Ferriman-Gallwey score, first described in 1961.1 A clinician looks at nine body areas on the face and body and grades each from 0 to 4.3 The top possible score is 36.
It’s a judgment call. Visual scores like this are rough, and two examiners can give the same woman different numbers.1
What’s ordinary
Researchers scored 633 women who came in for routine job physicals, not for their hair.3
- 22% scored 3 or more.3
- Of those, 69% already considered themselves hairy, against 16% of women who scored lower.3
- Black and White women had similar amounts of hair.3
Where the line falls depends on ancestry
A 2025 study pooled 9,829 women aged 18 to 45 from 12 studies in 8 countries to find where ordinary ends:4
| Cutoff score | Groups |
|---|---|
| 8 | White Iranian women4 |
| 7 | White Italian, Black African4 |
| 5 | Han Chinese, White Russian, Turkish, Black American4 |
| 4 | White American, Korean, Asian and mixed Russian4 |
That fits the 2023 international guideline, which sets the threshold at 4 to 6 for most groups.4 So comparing your chin with a friend’s from a different background tells you little.
When to get checked
See a doctor for thick, dark hair on your face, neck, chest, tummy, lower back, buttocks or thighs. You may have a blood test for hormones.2
Ask for an urgent appointment if dark hair appears suddenly, or your voice deepens or muscles grow.2
Before the visit: a clinician can’t score hair you removed last night. Take photos before you tweeze or shave, and ask the clinic whether to pause hair removal first.
For causes and options, see why you’re getting chin hairs, what PCOS is and does shaving make it grow back thicker?
Try: “I’ve got coarse hair on my chin, neck and lower belly that’s been spreading over the past year, and my periods are irregular. Could you score it and check my hormones?”
Hair, Everywhere covers this in Chapter 7, “The Chin Hair Report,” in sections called “How Much Is Normal?” and “The Scoring System.” Its Hair Log keeps a monthly photo of your chin taken before you tweeze, so a clinician can see the hair as it grows and how fast it’s changing. See the book.
