Does Shaving Your Chin Make Hair Grow Back Thicker? What Works on Gray Hairs
HairArticleShaving doesn't make facial hair grow back thicker or darker. Dermatologists say it only changes how the stubble feels. After 50 the bigger catch is color: laser hair removal won't work on gray or white hairs. Here is how each method compares for chin hairs, and when new hair needs a doctor first.

No. Shaving doesn’t make hair grow back thicker or darker. The British Association of Dermatologists1 says the belief that shaving encourages more hair growth “is not true.”1 A 2026 review of the research explains that shaving “doesn’t affect hair follicle biology or change hair characteristics but makes regrown hair feel thicker.”2
Why chin hair shows up after 50
It’s common for women to grow more facial hair gradually with age, especially after menopause.1 The NHS4 notes that lighter, finer hair of this kind usually isn’t hirsutism, the medical term for thick, dark hair on the face and body.4 See why you’re getting chin hairs.
Every method for chin hairs, compared
| Method | How long it lasts | Works on gray or white hair? | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shaving | A day to a few days3 | Yes | Irritation, nicks, ingrown hairs3 |
| Tweezing | Until the hair regrows | Yes | Possible scarring or dark marks2 |
| Threading | 4 to 5 weeks3 | Yes | Ingrown hairs in inexperienced hands3 |
| Waxing | A few weeks or longer3 | Yes | Irritation; use with caution on the face1 |
| Hair removal cream | Longer than shaving3 | Yes | Irritation; do a skin test first1 |
| Eflornithine cream (prescription) | Slows growth while you use it; 4 to 8 weeks to notice1 | Yes | Burning, stinging, inflamed follicles1 |
| Laser | About 6 treatments to destroy a follicle3 | No. It won’t work on blonde, white, gray or red hair3 | The light targets hair pigment2 |
| Electrolysis | Aims to destroy the root; multiple sessions1 | Uses an electric current in each follicle, not light1 | Little research behind it2 |
The laser row matters most after 50. If some of your chin hairs have already turned white, a laser package won’t touch them. Electrolysis treats each follicle with a needle and current instead.1 Before booking, see questions for an electrolysis provider and home light device checks.
Shaving your face, done gently
- Shaving is fine for the chin. Its limits are irritation and ingrown hairs, not thicker regrowth.13
- If bumps follow, see ingrown hairs and razor bumps.
- Face razors sold for “dermaplaning” are shaving with a different blade. See dermaplaning razor checks.
- Eflornithine is a prescription cream that slows hair growth on the face.4 See our eflornithine review.
When to see a doctor first
The NHS4 says to ask for an urgent appointment if new thick, dark hair suddenly starts growing on your face and body, your voice is getting lower, or your muscles are getting bigger.4
Try: “I’ve started getting coarse chin hairs, and some are white. Which removal methods will work on my hair color and skin, and do you need to check my hormones first?”
Hair, Everywhere tackles this in Chapter 7, “The Chin Hair Report.” Its Pick It match asks four questions in order, your hair color, your skin tone, the area and your goal, and the method is the answer to the last one. See the book.
