Does Washing Your Hair Often Cause Hair Loss? What Studies Show

Seeing hair in the drain makes many women wash less. But a study of Asian adults found daily washing beat once-a-week washing on every measure, with no damage to hair, though the shampoo maker paid for it. A Saudi survey of 4,796 people also linked more frequent shampooing with better hair and scalp. Dermatologists say to wash based on how oily your scalp gets. Here is what the studies show.

Hair in the drain after a wash can make it feel like shampoo is the problem, so many women start washing less. The studies don’t back that up.

Shedding is normal

Losing 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal.1 Excessive shedding means significantly more than that, every day.1

The wash-frequency study

Researchers ran two studies in Asian adults with no scalp conditions:2

  • In a survey of people’s usual habits, satisfaction with hair and scalp was highest when washing 5 to 6 times a week.2
  • In a controlled test, daily washing beat once-a-week washing on every measure.2
  • Daily washing caused no measurable damage to the hair.2

The authors concluded worries about “overcleaning” were unfounded.2 The study was fully paid for by a shampoo maker, and two authors worked there.2

A larger survey

A survey of 4,796 people in Saudi Arabia linked more frequent shampooing with better hair and scalp condition.3 Long and curly hair went with more reported breakage and daily hair loss.3 It was a one-time online survey, so it shows a link, not cause.

What dermatologists advise

  • Wash based on how oily or dirty your hair gets.4
  • An oily scalp with straight hair may need daily shampoo.4
  • Dry, textured, curly or thick hair can go longer, but wash at least every 2 to 3 weeks.4
  • Flakes can mean you’re not shampooing often enough.4
  • Focus shampoo on the scalp, not the full length.4

When shedding is more than shampoo

If you’re losing far more than usual for weeks, look beyond your shampoo; see why is my hair shedding so much?, shedding for more than 6 months and how many hairs a day is normal.

Try: “I’ve cut back to washing my hair once a week because I was scared of losing more, but my scalp is itchy and flaky. How often should I be washing for my hair type?”

Hair, Everywhere covers counting shed hairs in Chapter 5, “The Shed,” in a section called “The Hundred-Hair Line,” which argues the date shedding started tells you more than any count. Its Hair Log tracks that date with monthly photos of your part. See the book.
