NIV Mask Skin Changes: Contact Your Ventilation Team Early
Sleep & NighttimeArticleReport changes under your prescribed home ventilation mask before skin damage worsens.

If the mark beneath your mask worries you, bring that concern to your ventilation team.
What to report
- Colour changes: Skin may look redder or darker. Redness may be less visible on darker skin.1
- How it feels: Affected skin can feel warmer or firmer than surrounding areas.1
- A changing seal: Tell the team if you increasingly need to tighten the mask to achieve a seal. Excessive tightening adds pressure.1
Ask for individual advice
“Please assess these skin changes and my mask fit. What pressure-relieving support is appropriate for my setup?” The service describes protective items it can provide; ask your own team what applies to you.1
You can write that opening question before calling. Keep a page beside you for the answer, and ask the person advising you to explain unfamiliar terms.
Keep the answer easy to find
Record the date and the name of the person you spoke with. Keep the notes together rather than relying on remembering the conversation later.
