Overnight Oximetry Requested?Clarify the Preparation Before Your Test
Sleep & NighttimeArticleCheck the instructions for the device your sleep service supplies, including its nail-varnish requirements.

If your clinician has requested overnight oximetry, read the supplied instructions before the test night. Ask the service about anything you cannot follow.1
What the device records
Cambridge University Hospitals describes overnight oximetry as checking blood oxygen levels while you sleep. Its service supplies a small wrist device with a light-emitting finger probe. Follow the instructions for the equipment your own service provides.1
Check preparation in advance
CUH asks patients to remove nail varnish before setting up its device because varnish can prevent it functioning properly. If you wear nail products and are unsure what your service requires, contact the team before the test. This is not a guide to removing gel or artificial nails yourself.1
Try: “What preparation does my supplied device need, and whom should I contact if I cannot follow an instruction?”1
Clarify the setup
Ask the service to explain unclear equipment instructions. CUH directs patients with questions to its lung-function team. Get help from your own service rather than adapting another device’s setup.1
Did I Do That in My Sleep? includes a Visit Brief. Use it to keep your preparation questions together. See the book.
