Call 999 in the UK, or your local emergency number elsewhere, if your lips, mouth, tongue or throat suddenly swell, you struggle to breathe, or your throat feels tight or swallowing becomes difficult. Do not drive yourself to emergency care.1

The myth: swelling always means allergy

Angioedema means sudden swelling. The NHS1 describes several types, including allergic reactions and non-allergic medicine reactions, most commonly involving ACE inhibitors. Some cases have an unknown cause. Appearance alone does not establish which type you have.1

Bring the medicine history

Tell the clinician what you take and describe the swelling. Ask: “Could a medicine be involved, and what assessment or treatment do I need?” Identifying the underlying cause belongs in the clinical assessment; a clinician may prescribe a different medicine if one is thought responsible.1

Skin, Head to Toe includes a visit script. Use it to keep your medicine list and questions together for the assessment. See the book.
