Tacrolimus Ointment: Plan Sun Protection With Your Prescriber
SkinArticleDiscuss outdoor plans and artificial UV exposure with the team managing your eczema prescription.

If you have been prescribed tacrolimus ointment for eczema, include sun protection in the prescription discussion. MedlinePlus advises protecting your skin from real and artificial sunlight during treatment, even when the medicine is not on your skin.1
Check the protection plan
MedlinePlus says not to use sun lamps or tanning beds or undergo ultraviolet light therapy during treatment. It advises staying out of sunlight as much as possible and wearing loose-fitting clothing to protect treated skin when you need to be outside. Ask your doctor about other protection measures.1
- Have your exact ointment packaging and Medication Guide available.
- Explain outdoor work, travel or other activities you need to discuss.
- Tell the team about any planned light treatment.
Try: “I use this tacrolimus ointment and have these outdoor plans. Can you explain the sun-protection instructions for my treatment?”
Read your Medication Guide and ask the doctor or pharmacist about anything unclear. MedlinePlus recommends this when treatment begins and when the prescription is refilled.1
